Auslan (Australian Sign Language) was introduced as the Language Program at Sunbury Heights Primary School in Term 3 2020.

From 2021, students from F -6 will be engaged in developmentally appropriate activities grounded in the Auslan Scope and Sequence Victorian Curriculum. The learning of an additional language gives students the opportunity to gain an understanding of culture through language.

The Auslan Language Program assists students in developing an awareness of social inclusiveness and an understanding of Australia as a multi-lingual and multicultural nation.

Auslan creates an opportunity for students to experience another language as an alternative and valid means of communication.

Learning another language enables students to make comparisons, which enhances their understanding of the grammatical structure and vocabulary of their first language.

As an inclusive school that welcomes and caters for all children, students at Sunbury Heights PS are taught to communicate through this rich, visual language and to gain an appreciation of the culture of the Deaf Community.
